Cultuurplein
redevelopment public space innercourt CODA museum, Apeldoorn, 2012
The innercourt of three major cultural institutions in the city centre of Apeldoorn has always been a problematic no go area between buildings of renowed architects such as Hertzberger, Ruijssenaars and Uytenhaak. The difficult spatial situation, the height differences, lack of use and maintanance askes for a highly effective intervention that solves a number of problems.
The new design aims to improve the artificial character of the courtyard in contrast with the public space around. In this way it provides a new typology of space in the public space structure of the innercity which mainly exists out of streets and large squares. On the basis of a simple schema parts of the areas are annexed together which creates a new logic in the structure. Materials with a specific artificial look and feel are used tot stenghten the unique artificical athmosphere. Finally the cultural square has been kissed awake and is now a much loved background for outdoor cinema events and stage for art performances.
